Feeding with dignity. Reducing waste. Empowering communities.
At 5N2, our Pantry Program supports individuals and families who have limited access to traditional food assistance. We work through trusted community partners to connect people with healthy, rescued food that would otherwise go to waste—Our pantry approach is built around dignity, privacy, and real support. By rescuing surplus food from farms, grocery stores, and distributors, we make sure it reaches the people who need it most—fresh, nutritious, and shared without stigma.
“We exclusively rescue and repurpose food to feed the hungry.”
How It Works:
- We rescue good surplus food that would otherwise be discarded.
- We repack and store food in our facility, maintaining proper safety and hygiene.
- We distribute to qualified clients through a confidential referral system as part of our pantry program Scarborough.
Who Can Apply?
5N2 operates a Pantry Program for clients who cannot access conventional food assistance services. Through a referral system with our partner organizations, individuals and families are able to receive nutritious food supplies with dignity through our food pantry Scarborough support network.

Best Before Date
A best-before date tells you the anticipated amount of time that an unopened food product, when stored under appropriate conditions, will retain its:
- Freshness
- Taste
- Nutritional value
Best-before dates do not guarantee product safety. However, they do give you information about the freshness and potential shelf life of the foods you get. You can eat food after the best-before date has passed. However, this food may lose some of its freshness, flavor, and nutritional value. Texture may have also changed, but it is still safe for consumption.
The best-before dates are about food quality and not food safety.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), non-perishable foods (with an anticipated shelf life greater than 90 days – eg, canned food, etc.) are not required to be labelled with a best-before date or storage information, as they are generally considered to be shelf stable. Non-perishable food like this can be eaten after the best-before date has passed, unless:
- The packaging is damaged
- Food smells or looks bad, or is odd
- Cans are oddly shaped, dented, or rusty
- The seal is broken, and the product is leaking
Expiry Date
They’re not the same as best-before dates and are required only on certain foods such as:
- Infant formulas
- Meal replacements
- Formulated liquid diets (used for oral or tube feeding)
- Nutritional supplements
These types of food have strict compositional and nutritional specifications. After the expiry date, these specifications may not be met, and the food may not have the same nutrient content as declared on the label. Food should not be bought, sold, or eaten if the expiry date has passed. Health Canada recommends discarding items that are past their expiry date.

Ways To Donate
Because much of our food is rescued, we don’t spend heavily on purchasing groceries. However, we still rely on donations to cover essential operating costs that keep the pantry running—like transportation, storage, staffing, and distribution.

5N2 Pantry Program: Community Support FAQ
The 5N2 Pantry Program is a vital resource that provides families with more than just food—it provides dignity through choice. By offering a “shopping-style” experience, 5N2 ensures that neighbors can select the items that best fit their dietary needs and cultural preferences.
The Pantry Program at 5N2 is a cornerstone of our mission to offer a dignified solution to food insecurity. By learning how to help food charities in Scarborough, you can play a direct role in stocking our shelves and ensuring that local families have access to the groceries they need to thrive.
You can help immediately by donating needed pantry items, making a financial gift, or signing up to volunteer. Even a small contribution helps keep shelves stocked and supports families who rely on the pantry week to week.
The most helpful items are usually practical, everyday groceries that families can actually use at home. Needs can change, so it’s best to check the current wish list or guidance on the page before you drop anything off.
Because it gives people choice. Instead of handing out one fixed bag, families can pick items that match their dietary needs and cultural preferences. That small difference helps people feel respected—and it reduces waste, because items are more likely to be used.
Yes. Volunteers may help with sorting donations, stocking shelves, organizing items, and supporting pantry days. It’s hands-on work, but it makes a direct difference in the community.
Yes. Food drives are a great way for teams to come together for a clear goal. If your group wants to feed the hungry in a practical way, organizing a pantry-focused drive can have a big impact—especially when it matches the pantry’s current needs.
Financial gifts help fill the gaps when certain items run low. They also support pantry operations like storage, supplies, and getting the right food in the right quantity. Money gives flexibility—so the pantry can respond quickly when needs change.
The “best” time is usually when the pantry is actively preparing for distribution days or when shelves need restocking. Since schedules can change, the easiest way is to follow the instructions on the page or reach out to confirm current drop-off and volunteer times.
The pantry stays sustainable through consistent community support: regular donors, volunteers, food drives, and partners who keep the program steady over time. The goal is to maintain a reliable supply of groceries so families can count on help when they need it.
